OSHA Launches Forklift Emphasis Program

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) launched a program that aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries involving forklifts. The four-state program covers Alabama, Mississippi, Florida and Georgia, and will run through September 30, unless extended. “Powered industrial trucks are a significant source of serious and fatal injuries to workers,” says Cindy Coe, OSHA’s regional administrator in Atlanta. “Employers are responsible for ensuring that workers follow the proper safety procedures and for eliminating hazards from the workplace.” The program includes inspections primarily focused on the training received by operators, maintenance and repair, and the pathways traveled by forklifts, to ensure clear visibility and determine whether hazards exist.
