A Totally Mental Makeover

By Michael C. Anthony

I believe success is based on three important strategies, and those who achieve success master all three and use them together to achieve their goals. By practicing each of these three things, you can achieve success that even surprises yourself!

Successful use of these concepts first requires you understand each and know how to apply them to your actions. Crafting all three into habit takes some effort, but once you master this three-pronged approach, it becomes second nature. I will show you how to turn the concepts of belief, tenacity and expectation into action and achieve your goals. This is how you will experience a Totally Mental Makeover.

“If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.”–Mahatma Gandhi

All great achievements begin with belief in a specific end result. You must believe in yourself and your ability to accomplish your goals. If your goals are career oriented you must believe in your organization or business.

Often, belief is the most challenging part of achieving goals. Too many people doubt their mission and their ability to find success. This first step requires silencing that nagging voice in the back of your mind that tries to convince you success is not possible. Many allow it to convince them misperceptions are true and allow the voice to shape reality. You must ignore this voice and embrace belief in yourself. People sometimes make the mistake of thinking belief is a hard-wired concept. They do not realize the control they have over their belief and they assume they either believe in something or they do not. Some life lessons have even taught us that unless we are able to see something, it does not exist. I have encountered many people who decide that until they achieve success they have no reason to believe it is possible. Without results, they do not think it is possible to put faith in their ability to achieve. Unfortunately, this creates a cycle of failure.

The first key to success is taking the risk of believing in yourself, especially when you have yet to achieve your goals. The most successful people in the world have the innate ability to believe all of their dreams are possible. Think about how you would encourage a loved one to pursue a goal. Often, the way we speak in our own minds is much different than how we would speak with a loved one, but this negative self-talk can destroy our dreams before we even take action. Believing in yourself requires action and taking control of your self-talk gives you a strong foundation from which to succeed.

Strategy 2: Tenacity

“Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal: my strength lies solely in my tenacity.”—Louis Pasteur

Tenacity is the next step toward achieving your goals. Silencing the doubt in your mind and believing in yourself is a big step, but it is not enough to reach your desired outcome. This step is where all of the hard work comes into play. You must keep pushing until you get what you want. Whether it takes hours of practicing, rehearsing, or learning new skills, you must be willing to invest the time it takes to achieve success.

Think about the steps an athlete takes to achieve his or her goals. Very few people have ever walked onto a field or track and immediately mastered the skills necessary to compete. By the time most athletes are noticed, they have already invested years of practice. Those who have reached the pinnacle of their sport likely spent all of their free time training their bodies and minds. You see only the end result of success, but to achieve that success, years of hard work must occur.

The same is true for your success. No matter your industry or mission, you must put in the time to reach your goals. Success begins with a belief that you can achieve, but it does not end there. You must work hard to make your belief a reality.

Strategy 3: Expectation

“Our limitations and success will be based, most often, on your own expectations for ourselves. What the mind dwells upon, the body acts upon.” —Dennis Waitley

Finally, you must live in a state of expectation. Expecting the best results prepares you for the best possible outcome. It requires a positive attitude and the willingness to let go and accept what comes to you.

It is at this point you release some of your control over the end result. Many people find this challenging, but it is necessary to reach your goal. Realize, at this point, you have done all you can to achieve your desired end result. There comes a time when there is nothing more you can do and you must relax and wait for your hard work to pay off. However, you must also expect this will occur. This positive approach puts you in the right frame of mind to make the most of your success and parlay it into future endeavors.

The keys to expecting a positive outcome are relaxation and patience. Imagine how you feel regarding simple home projects. We’ll use gardening as an example. When spring arrives, you begin planning your garden. You believe with certainty that what you do now will pay off with a bountiful harvest in the coming months. You spend days laboring under the warm sun, digging, planting, and creating the potential for a healthy garden. You reach a point when you have done all you can to achieve your goal. All that is left to do is sit back, sip a cool glass of lemonade, and expect that the seeds you planted will turn into a vibrant crop.

Expectation is often the second most difficult part of the process. I find it amusing that for most people, the “blood, sweat, and tears” part of the process (tenacity) is easiest. Most people who want success are prepared to do the hard work and are willing to put in the time it takes. However, those same people often struggle to believe in themselves and then to expect a positive outcome. These first step (belief) and third step (expectation) should require the least effort, but they are often the most difficult to master.

If you are ready to achieve your goals, then get excited! I have seen many master these three skills and I am looking forward to sharing these concepts and much more this November. I’ll share my crazy mental stunts with you and help you make the connection between what you think and what you achieve. The Totally Mental Makeover puts you in control of your future and makes the path from hard work to success much easier.
