In my 2nd Quarter Editor’s Note, I wrote about the “Social Convention” and how we were going to make every effort to make this year’s Convention more social than ever. After having attended Convention in Orlando this week, I can say that this was an unabashed success!
Convention, to me, is such a unique opportunity because there are dozens of insightful and educational keynote speeches and breakout sessions but those, to many, aren’t even the main attraction of Convention. For many members, the best thing about attending Convention are the networking opportunities available. MHEDA is such a tight-knit organization and with more than 700 members converging in one hotel, it becomes a gathering of old friends.
Members are able to forge bonds that last beyond Convention week and often times blossom into work relationships and partnerships. The Roundtable conversations are routinely one of the most well-attended sessions of the entire week. As one member told me this week, “We attend MODEX and ProMat to find clients. We attend MHEDA to learn and relationship build.”
And as I discussed in my column, MHEDA has made it easier than ever to break the ice and build those relationships. The introduction of the Poken tags a couple of years ago in Miami was a monster hit that continues to be extremely popular today. This year, we also made an effort to incorporate more social networking into the Convention. As more and more members are adopting social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+, we are now more able to bring some of the outstanding education and networking opportunities that Convention offers and bring them online.
I want to send a special shout out to MHEDA members both in attendance and from afar that used the #MHEDA hashtag during the event. This was, by far, the most social media activity that I’ve ever seen from MHEDA members and the conversations that flowed from it were outstanding. Below are a few sample tweets (make sure to click on the link to see the pictures in each tweet) that were sent out by social media rock stars during the Convention. They ranged from:
