By Mark Milovich, 2015 MHEDA President
It’s the usual hot and humid July day in Atlanta. I’m in the back of our shop area talking with one of our sales reps about an opportunity when I hear my secretary over our PA system say, “Mark, 3200 please!” which means I have a phone call holding. As I walk toward the front of our office, I’m not thinking about who it might be. As I pass my receptionist’s desk, I say, “Who we got?” “It’s Greg Morrison from Morrison Industrial.” That phrase stops me dead in my tracks.
At the time, Greg was the Past President and Chair of the Nominating Committee. His call meant one thing – The Executive Committee had concluded its summer meeting and one person had been chosen to be nominated to move up to the Executive Committee. My Board of Directors term was set to expire at the end of the year, so this call was either the “Thank you for your service” call or the “You’re being nominated for the EC” call. Once voted on the EC, you’re in line to ascend to be President of MHEDA.
In 1985, my father, Mitch Milovich held the office of President of the Association. I was 17 years old and remember thinking, “Wow, this would be cool to do one day”. When I changed majors in college and decided that lift trucks would be my future, I knew I would want to be active in the Association just as my dad had been.
I made my way back to my office, and, with my hand actually shaking and my gut in a knot, I answered Greg’s call. In the minutes that followed, I heard the words that I so deeply wanted to hear- “Mark, you’re being nominated for the Executive Committee!”
After a few minutes of conversation, I hung up with Greg, and sat quietly at my desk, letting it sink in. My dad just happened to be in the office that day, and his office is across from mine. I took a deep breath and went in to see him. “I just got off the phone with Greg Morrison.” My voice cracked a little when I said to my dad, “I’m being nominated for the EC”. He jumped up, “That’s great!! Congratulations!” and he gave me a big hug.
For me, holding this position that my father held 30 years ago is deeply personal. To say this is an honor is an understatement, and I am so very grateful to those who nominated me for this privilege. I am extremely humbled to join the ranks of some of the great men from our industry that have held this position. And the opportunity to work more closely with Liz and the MHEDA Staff, well that is just icing on the cake!
2015 promises to be a great year for our industry as several forecasts predict a solid year. Our businesses are growing, our opportunities are growing, and as MHEDA members, our influence in the marketplace is growing. 2015 is also lining up to be an outstanding year for your Association. As MHEDA enters into its 7th decade, there are some great programs coming for this year and the years ahead. We continue to expand MHEDA-U, our educational website. Keep a lookout for expanded programs and learning tracks, as well as more online/on-demand opportunities; we will continue to offer the highly successful and popular Regional Networking meetings with plans to expand these meetings to Canada for our friends north of the border; we will build on the success of the 2014 Convention held in Orlando with our 2015 meeting this year in San Antonio- you will not want to miss this one! We’ve worked hard to improve MHEDA’s DiSC Report under the guidance of Currie Management Consultants. In 2015 Currie will continue to produce the report for the Industrial Truck segment and a new report will be launched for the Engineered Systems/Storage & Handling members.
I hope you are as excited as I am about the coming year and the opportunities it will bring. I speak for the entire Board when I say we are here to serve you, our members. If I, or any one of us, can be of service to you, please do not hesitate to call. 2015 is going to be AWESOME – A Dream Come True!
